Venice AI in 60 seconds
Venice is a private, uncensored-positioned AI app that launched in 2024. GeekWire reported Erik Voorhees as CEO and Jesse Proudman as CTO, and described a crypto token (VVV) that can be staked for API capacity. Its own tagline is “Private, unrestricted AI for everyone.” The product runs open-source models, offers chat, image generation and, on paid plans, video and music via credits.
What Venice does well
Working free tier, web search on every plan, chat history stored locally in your browser, privacy modes up to end-to-end encryption on paid tiers, a public API.
Where it may not fit
History tied to one browser by default, a credit system for premium features, many plans to choose from, and a minimum age of 13 rather than 18.
Unrestricted AI
Chat that refuses far less, live search with clickable sources, image generation on Max. History in your account, adults only, no free plan.

| Max | $200 | Unlimited | Highest limits on Pro models | 22,500 | 3-month credit rollover, highest API limits |
iFrom venice.ai/pricing, checked October 2026. Venice states 100 credits = $1.
Two things to note. First, the jump from Pro to Pro Plus is mostly about credits, which pay for video, music, frontier models and API calls. If you only chat, Pro covers you. Second, the matrix lists document uploads, image understanding and custom system prompts as paid features, not free ones.
Is Venice AI free?
Yes, genuinely. The free plan gives 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts a day on base models, plus web search. That's enough to judge whether Venice's answers suit you. It's not enough for daily heavy use: ten messages go quickly in a real conversation, and Pro models, document uploads and custom system prompts sit behind the $18 plan.
For comparison, Unrestricted AI has no free plan or free trial at all. We say that up front because it's the first thing people ask. The reason is simple: no free tier means no ads and no selling data to pay for free users.
Is Venice AI safe? Privacy and content, on the record
“Safe” means two different things here: is your data safe, and is the content appropriate for who's using it. Here's what Venice's own pages say, without spin.
- 01StorageVenice says conversation history is kept on your device and never stored on its servers.
- 02Processing modesits privacy page describes several. In “Anonymous” mode requests are relayed to third-party model providers, which it says see and likely save the prompt. “Private” mode relies on contracts under which no prompt or response is stored. Paid tiers add hardware-isolated (TEE) and end-to-end encrypted options.
- 03Content rulesthe terms ban illegal use, exploiting minors, using someone's likeness without consent, and automated scraping of the web interface, among others.
- 04Agethe terms set a minimum age of 13, with parental consent required under 18, and a mature filter that minors may not bypass.
Venice's privacy design is more thoughtful than most consumer AI apps, and it's explicit about which mode protects what. Choose the mode deliberately. Parents should know the service is open to teens with consent; Unrestricted AI is 18+ only.
When Venice is the right choice
- You want to try a less-filtered assistant for free, today.
- Privacy is your top priority and you like the idea of history living only in your browser.
- You need an API for your own app or agent and want to pay with the same credits.
- You want video and music generation alongside chat.
- You enjoy picking and switching between open-source models.
If those are your boxes, stay on Venice. Switching for the sake of it makes no sense.
When a Venice AI alternative makes more sense
- 01You use several devices.Browser-local history is private, but it lives on one device by default. Moving it means backup and restore, a Pro feature. Account-based history is simpler if you hop from laptop to phone.
- 02You hate credit math.Venice's premium features run on credits. Some people prefer one flat plan with clear allowances.
- 03You want an adults-only service.Venice allows 13+ with consent. We're 18+, full stop.
- 04You want answers you can check. Our chat runs live web search and shows clickable sources inside the answer.
- 05You don't want to pick models. We give you one assistant tuned to refuse far less and skip the lectures, with a more permissive model on Max.

Other Venice AI alternatives worth a look
Generic “alternatives” lists send Venice users to mainstream assistants, which misses the point: if you came to Venice for fewer refusals or more privacy, ChatGPT-style tools are a step backwards. These are the realistic options, with facts from each official site as of October 2026.
- 01FreedomGPTone app with a large catalog of models, web search and image tools on a free tier; Pro is $20/mo with 2,200 credits. Closest to Venice's pick-your-model approach.
- 02NoFilterGPTthe cheapest paid option at $11.99/mo, with image generation and an API. Its site says the model works without internet queries, so no live search.
- 03Uncensored AI (uncensored.com)many models with side-by-side comparison, real-time web search and a code mode. No public pricing page when we checked.
- 04A local open modelmaximum privacy and no subscription, if you have the hardware. Our explainer on abliterated models covers how many of these are made.
- 05Unrestricted AIone assistant, far fewer refusals, live search with sources, images on the Max plan, adults only, no free plan.
Switching from Venice without losing anything
- Save what matters first. Venice keeps history in your browser, so clearing site data or changing device can wipe it. Copy out conversations you want to keep, or use Pro's encrypted backup.
- Bring your best prompts. Pick five prompts Venice handled well and five it handled badly. Run all ten on the new tool before you commit.
- Check the billing logic. Compare what your monthly use actually costs under each plan, credits included.
- Read the rules. Every service draws lines somewhere. Ours are short and public; read them before you rely on any tool for sensitive work.
Running both for a month is also fine. Many people keep a free Venice account for quick private queries and pay for one main assistant.
